Visual Design Principle for UX Design
Knowledge Sharing Program iSTTS again held a webinar on November 25, 2021 entitled "Visual Design Principles for UX Design". Through the Zoom and Youtube platforms, this time KSP invited Mrs. Amelia Agustina Herlijanto, S.Ds., M.Med.Kom as the speaker who shared material about UX Design and things that need to be considered in designing UX in applications.
First of all, Mrs. Amel opens the material with an understanding of UX Design.
"The simple UX (user experience) design is how a product can interact with users," she said.
In this digital era, the increasing use of applications goes hand in hand with the increasing need for UX design. This is because application users prefer applications that are easier to understand and more comfortable to use. So, an application requires a UX design so that users feel at home when using the application.
Design principles should not be forgotten in UX design. In organizing visual information, Mrs. Amel explained that there are 4 basic principles that are connected to each other, namely: alignment, proximity, repetition, and contrast. She carefully explains each of these principles and presents examples of their application through her PowerPoint pages.
After discussing design principles, she also discussed about Interaction Design (IXD). According to Mrs. Amel's explanation, Interaction design is the difference between designing in print media and designing applications, because in applications/websites there is interaction.
In interaction design, there are also principles that need to be considered, so that user interaction can be effective and information can be conveyed properly to users. These principles are: Consistent, Predictable, Learnable, Visible, and Feedback. Mrs. Amel explained one by one about the importance of these principles. For example, in making an application, components that have similar behavior must have a similar appearance, for example red for warning signs, and green for success signs. This is an example of the application of one of the IXD principles, namely Consistent. In addition, in IXD one has to think about whether the user will know what type of interaction to do, for example which part to click, or which part to scroll.
An application/website that has a good interaction design will reduce the occurrence of user errors and can create a meaningful relationship between the user and the application/website.
"The thing to remember, don't be different just to be different, but if you want to make something different, make sure that it will be better," said Mrs. Amel.
After Mrs. Amel finished delivering her material, the webinar was then followed by a question-and-answer session for participants who had questions, and the webinar was then closed with a group photo session and filling out the attendance form.
